Okada/Police clash: Reinforcement dispatched from headquarters

The Ghana Police Service has dispatched a team of officers from the Regional Headquarters in Ho to restore calm at Aveyime near Sogakope in the Volta region following clashes between motor riders and the police.

Scores of commercial motorbike transport operators popularly known as Okada riders besieged the Aveyime Police Station on Friday, 11 August, 2017 after two of the riders died in an accident in their attempt to run from the police in a hot chase.

The aggrieved riders burnt car tyres in front of the police station and tried to force their way as they demand justice for the dead riders.

Class News’ Volta regional correspondent Emmanuel Atukpa reported on Friday, August 11, 2017 that the police were trying to clamp down on the activities of the riders which flout motor and traffic regulations and in an attempt to escape from the police had a crash.

However a press statement issued by ASP David Eklu, Director-General of Public Affairs in the region said the police is closely monitoring the situation and will engage with various community leaders in Aveyime to ensure law and order.

The law enforcement body also assured the people of Aveyime that the issue will be investigated thoroughly in order to establish what led to the incident.
